Quiz

What happened?

  • Nobody in the group moved
  • Everyone had to move when one person walked through the group
  • Only some people had to move when one person walked through the group

In this game, we have created a system. Every person was a node or part. When one node moved, it made other nodes move.

Why did this happen?

  • The people I was thinking of had to move, so I had to move too
  • Some people were thinking of me, and moved when I moved
  • Everyone was connected, even though we all moved differently
  • The distance rule meant the one person moving made the whole group move
  • All of the above

People didn’t move just because they pushed each other; there were invisible relationships causing this. By choosing to link their position to someone else, people were forced to move in response to them, and the people forcing those people to move too.

This simple action caused a new thing to happen – A whole group of moving people! We call this an emergent behaviour; that’s a group of simple nodes, like people, animals, or objects together making something more complex happen that wasn’t planned or expected.
