Background

The Careers Compass 10 Program is a fully funded Adelaide University (AU) initiative designed to enhance the Year 10 Exploring Identities and Futures (EIF) subject and careers education in low socio-economic schools predominantly from the Northern suburbs. Delivered on one same day per week over three or four consecutive weeks, the program utilises trained AU pre-service teachers and psychology student mentors to empower your Year 10 students by facilitating personalised one-on-one 30-minute life and career aspiration guidance chats and provide potential curriculum support in the classrooms. These guided chats will support your students in gaining clarity about their future aspirations beyond school, learn how to navigate industry specific websites, and guide them on creating a Vocational Education & Training (VET) and Year 11 and 12 subject wish-list, tailored to your school.

Career Guidance Chats
Through a structured mentoring conversation with an AU student, Year 10 students will benefit from exploring:
  • Personal strengths, values, life motivators, and future goals
  • Career aspirations by learning how to navigate industry specific websites
  • Learn about relevant tertiary education pathways such as university, Registered Training Organisations (RTO), or government agencies and their entry requirements
  • VET and School-Based Apprenticeship (SBA) options tailored to your school
  • Year 11 and 12 subject wish list tailored to your school
These conversations are guided by an online tool, with the information from the career guidance chats collected and provided back to the school.

What Schools Receive
The program is designed to provide meaningful insights back to schools to support both individual student guidance and whole-cohort planning, including:
  • Individualised student reports created from each student’s one-on-one guidance chat so that your students remember what they spoke about (for students)
  • A spreadsheet collating all of the Year 10 cohort’s chat responses including their career aspirations, VET courses and subjects each student may be interested in (for teachers)
  • Year 10 cohort-wide data statistical summary report reflecting on how your students have responded, including senior subject interests, VET, and SBA interests (for teachers)
Curriculum Support (Optional)
On the final days of the program, AU students may also provide curriculum support by working alongside teachers in student support roles. AU students can work one-on-one with school students or in small groups to support your students’ learning, under teacher supervision and guidance.
