Your Journey
The Teaching Futures Pathway fast-tracks your entry into teaching by partnering with schools, allowing you to work in a paid role while you learn. You will combine teaching theory with real-world classroom experience in a supportive school environment, accelerating your growth to becoming an exceptional teacher.
When you join us as a Professional Associate, you will complete a Master of Teaching (Primary or Secondary) degree at a South Australian initial teacher education (ITE) provider* over 2.5 years while working in a paid role at a partnering school from day one.
Throughout the program, you will participate in a Pathway Workplace Professional Learning Program. This self-paced program prepares you to become a future leader through hands-on learning at your school, where you will be an active participant, not just a learner. You will work with an experienced teacher in a professional learning community to develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based teaching strategies.
The Teaching Futures pathway is designed to prepare you to thrive in more complex school environments. You’ll receive targeted training in areas such as:
- maintaining your own well-being
- culturally informed and responsive pedagogies
- integrating digital technologies
- designing positive and effective classroom environments
This dynamic environment, supported by experienced teacher-mentors, will accelerate your growth as a teacher.
Your progress through the 2.5-year Teaching Futures Pathway
- Year 1: Start in a 0.3 FTE Support Role
- Year 2, Semester 1: Work under a Special Authority to Teach (SAT) at 0.5 FTE
- Year 2, Semester 2: Become a Provisionally Registered Teacher, employed at 1.0 FTE with a 0.9 FTE teaching load
- Program Completion: Qualify as a proficient, fully registered teacher
Participants will benefit from working in geographically clustered school sites, fostering a sense of collaboration and community within a professional learning network of peers

You acknowledge that your placements for your Initial Teacher Education program will be undertaken in a South Australian Northern suburb school
Authority to Work
You hold, or will apply for, an approved authority to work from the Department for Education (DfE) prior to commencing employment
Willing to Accept Employment
You are willing to accept employment in a school support role in a South Australian Northern suburb school (likely in the Salisbury or Playford Council Areas) at 0.3FTE per school week in Terms 1 to 4 of the 2025 school year. (Year 1 of the TFP program)
Willing to Obtain Special Authority to Teach
You are willing to accept a Special Authority to Teach* (0.5 FTE) in the first half of 2026 (Year 2 of the TFP program) and transition to a provisionally registered teacher for the second half of Year 2 and the first half of Year 3 (1.0 FTE with a reduced workload of 0.9FTE). *The granting of a Special Authority to Teach (SAT) is subject to approval by the South Australian Teachers Registration Board

The Teaching Futures Pathway is committed to increasing diversity in the teaching workforce. It is designed for aspiring teachers from a variety of backgrounds, especially those who:
- Wants to transition into teaching from another career, or
- Have strong connections to low SES, rural, or regional communities, or
- Identify as First Nations.
Your unique perspectives and experiences can greatly enrich the teaching profession.
You will receive a $16,000 tax-free stipend in the first year, valuable on-the-job experience and access to a strong network of mentors and educational researchers. You will also benefit from an employment-based training program, blending theory with practical experience in a host school alongside paid employment while you train.
As part of your initial teacher training, you will be required to undertake a role as a 0.3FTE support role alongside an experienced teacher – in the area of Curriculum Support – at one of our partnering schools. In addition, you will receive a stipend of $16,000 to alleviate the financial burden and need for other work.

These rates are determined according to the standard School Teacher Pay scales set by the Government of South Australia.

The program begins with Professional Associates working in a School Support Role (0.3 FTE) while completing their degree. They will progress to roles as Special Authority Teachers* (0.5 FTE) and then as Provisionally Registered Teachers (working 0.9 FTE whilst being paid at a 1.0FTE) before achieving full registration at the end of the 2.5 years.

You will receive comprehensive support throughout your journey, including administrative, personal, and professional assistance. You will also participate in workplace learning to strengthen your teaching skills and wellbeing.

As an associate, you will be expected to commit to completing your teacher training, participate in Pragmatic Adaptive Design workshops, engage in reflective practices, collaborate with school staff, fulfil your employment duties at your host school, and contribute to a positive learning environment throughout the program.
While the program requires dedication, associates are encouraged to manage their time effectively and communicate any challenges to ensure a successful experience. As this is employment based training, it is likely that you will not need to seek other paid employment.
The Pathway Workplace Professional Learning Program (PWPL) is a self-paced program that trains you to become a future leader through hands-on learning at your school site.
In PWPL, you aren’t a passive learner; you will be an active agent of change from the beginning of your Pathway.
During the Pathway, you will work alongside an experienced teacher in a supportive, structured environment to develop, implement and evaluate evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning, where you will have a hand in the future of education.
You will develop advanced, pragmatic and adaptive skills in:
- maintaining the well-being of your colleagues, your students, and you
- culturally informed and responsive pedagogies,
- integrating digital technologies into learning, and
- designing positive and effective classroom environments
You will be assigned an experienced teacher-mentor whom you will job-shadow in your first year to gain first-hand experience and support. This relationship will provide you with valuable insights and guidance as you navigate your teaching journey.
You will also collaborate closely with your mentor and other experienced teachers in your local school cluster. Together, you will implement evidence-based teaching strategies and develop effective classroom environments, enhancing your skills and fostering a strong foundation for your teaching practice.
The Pathway combines intensive face-to-face engagement and collaborative learning in a supportive school environment, enabling participants to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings.
