Chemistry Chaos

The school has run out of hand sanitizer. You will need to make a model of the molecule that is the active ingredient so more hand sanitizer can be made.

Students will need a copy of the worksheet for this activity.

Equipment (per group)

Recommended group size 2-3 students

  • Chemistry molecular model kits
  • Chemistry Chaos worksheet

Preparation (minimal on the day)

Hand out worksheets and molecular model kits to groups to be able to complete the task.

Extension task

When you have drawn your hand sanitizer collect the handout with pictures of other molecules. Make as many as you can using the model kits.

When you have made one record the name of the molecule and describe where this substance might be found.

See how many different molecules from the sheet you can make and get signed off in the time limit.

Additional Information

Schools can hire or buy 3D printed molecular model kits from Adelaide University, or we can supply the .stl files to print your own. For details, please email Anita at STEMpire@adelaide.edu.au.
