Careers Compass 10 Program Information
Engage directly with secondary school students, practice your counselling and interpersonal skills, and gain invaluable insights about adolescent behaviour.
How it Works
Offered across various secondary schools in metropolitan Adelaide, the Careers Compass 10 (CC10) program is delivered by Adelaide University (AU) staff. Join us as a psychology placement student and immerse yourself in adolescent psychology. The program has established long-lasting relationships with secondary school professionals, ensuring an authentic atmosphere for hands-on learning. It’s not just about enhancing your psychology theory knowledge, it’s about experiencing first-hand adolescent psychology and soft counselling in a supportive, real-world setting.
Within the CC10 program, you will become a mentor for secondary school students. You will feel empowered by engaging directly with Year 10 students and facilitating personalised one-on-one 30-minute guidance chats to help students gain clarity about their personal and career aspirations. These interactions are a platform to fine-tune your counselling and interpersonal skills with the support of the Adelaide University staff, who will ensure that you have all the resources and training necessary for success. As you make a difference in these students’ lives, you will use the knowledge and skills that you have learnt in your psychology degree and enhance your relationship-building abilities, apply psychology theories to practice, and use professional skills and behaviours in a work setting whilst having support guidance along the way.

What Previous Students Say
Clare Reuther
Psychology Graduate
Bachelor of Psychology (Counselling and Interpersonal Skills)
“This program is genuinely such a game-changer. As a Psychology student, you get to work alongside teachers and SSO’s in the schools. Understanding the different interdisciplinary contexts where people work is really important to understand from a psychological perspective. This has helped me in ways to be able to use my counselling and interpersonal skills to be able to connect with students.
My advice is to come on to the program, see students in their natural habitat of school, understand what school is like from their perspective, and that will help inform you as a practitioner moving forward in so many different varieties of work.”
