Background

Freezing Point is a fun and interactive program that encourages Year 6 students to build their self-awareness and self-efficacy while problem-solving and applying critical and creative thinking. The program enhances personal, social, and cognitive skills and builds children’s self-identity by helping them build positive relationships through team collaboration in unfamiliar situations. Students will reflect on their capabilities, justify their reasoning, and contribute to making informed group decisions by solving logical and creative problems that are hidden skills behind career success.

Each workshop features a carefully curated set of activities designed to engage and challenge students in their critical and creative thinking. The program is driven by a captivating video-based narrative that unfolds throughout the workshops. The narrative centres around a team of seven individuals, known as the “Compass Crew,” each representing a different set of transferable career-related skills and ways of thinking. These are aligned with various career clusters that students may encounter in the future. Throughout the workshops, your students will be designing and building with Lego, using computational thinking to solve novel problems, using deductive reasoning and creative thinking to solve the challenges they face and decode a creature’s speech and communicate with it via a chatbot.

The program is aligned with the ACARA V9 seven general capabilities and the Australian Blueprint for Career Development. It is delivered by Adelaide University staff with pre-service teachers assisting for one day per week over three consecutive weeks and consists of three 90-minute workshops, collectively called “Freezing Point”.
